External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has broken his silence on the ongoing tension between India and Canada. Speaking at a conference, S Jaishankar said that as far as Canada is concerned, there are some very specific issues. S Jaishankar said Canada asked us to subject our High Commissioner to police investigation and we decided to recall the High Commissioner and diplomats.
What did S Jaishankar say?
Speaking at the NDTV summit, S Jaishankar said it appears Indian diplomats in Canada are facing a problem if they are trying to find out what is happening on matters related to their welfare and security. Whereas, if you see in India, Canadian diplomats have no problem in going out and profiling our military, police, people. Canada should stop targeting people.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said the license Canadians give themselves in India is completely different from the restrictions they impose on diplomats in Canada. When we tell them that you have people who openly threaten the leaders of India, the diplomats of India, they call it freedom of expression. When Indian journalists comment on social media, if you threaten the Indian High Commissioner, they consider it freedom of expression. But if an Indian journalist says that the Canadian High Commissioner got very angry and walked out of South Block, then this is foreign interference.
Sharp target on Canada
