From October 1 i.e. tomorrow, lakhs of mobile users may face difficulty in making online payments. They may face difficulty in receiving the OTP i.e. One Time Password sent by the bank. The Telecom Regulatory Authority (TRAI) is going to implement a new rule from October 1, 2024, in which messages containing OTT links, URLs, APK links will be blocked. The telecom regulator was scheduled to implement it from September 1, which was extended to September 30 on the demand of telecom operators and other stakeholders.
There may be problem in getting OTP
The telecom regulator is going to implement new rules from October 1 to curb fake calls and messages. In this, users will not receive messages or calls from any telemarketer and institution which are not whitelisted. In such a situation, the users of those banks or payment platforms which have not whitelisted themselves will not receive OTP messages. It is not possible to make online payment without OTP.
Will get rid of fake calls and messages!
DoT and TRAI have tightened the rules to rid crores of mobile users of the country from fake calls and messages. According to the report, TRAI has asked telecom operators to register all those companies which provide OTP and other important information to the users through SMS. If the company is not registered then users will not receive SMS.
In the last few years, there have been cases of fraud worth crores of rupees through fake messages and calls. In most of the cases, hackers were sending fake links, links to APK files etc. to the users through SMS. As soon as these links were clicked, the personal information and device of the users got access to the hackers and fraud was done on a large scale.
What is the new rule of TRAI?
The telecom regulator has asked telecom operators to follow a certain template for messages containing important information like OTP and link, so that it can be easier to track fake messages. Apart from this, agencies providing banking or other services should be whitelisted, so that their messages can be received by the users. According to the new rule, messages sent by agencies which are not whitelisted will be blocked by the network. In such a situation, users will not receive OTP to make online payment.
