A 46-year-old Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member died of a heart attack during a protest in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur on Saturday. This organization was protesting demanding abolition of the Waqf Board. Demonstrations were held in the districts on the call of Devbhoomi Sangharsh Samiti. The committee is running a movement demanding the demolition of a mosque in Sanjauli and mandatory verification of migrants. A large number of people participated in the protest in Shimla, Hamirpur, Mandi, Chamba and Nahan.
Warning to run 'jail bharo movement'
During the demonstration in Hamirpur, when the protesters were going to submit the memorandum to the authorities, VHP worker Varinder Parmar fainted. He was taken to Hamirpur Medical College in a police vehicle, where doctors declared him dead. At first glance, heart attack was said to be the cause of death. Meanwhile, committee co-convenor Madan Thakur said the committee would wait for the corporation court's decision on the disputed mosque by October 5 before deciding the future strategy. He also warned of launching a 'jail bharo movement' after October 5. He said, “FIRs have been registered against us, while no action has been taken against AIMIM leader Shoaib Jamai for making a video from Sanjauli Masjid and inciting the sentiments of the people. Local people are not allowed there.”
Shoaib Jamai created controversy by making a video from Sanjauli Masjid and later saying that he would file a PIL and demand why buildings with more than four storeys in the neighborhood should not be considered illegal. The act was condemned by local Muslim leaders and leaders of the ruling Congress and opposition BJP. On September 11, when people demanding demolition of a part of Sanjauli Mosque broke the barricades and reached near the mosque and started pelting stones, the police lathi-charged them and used water cannon. Six policemen and four protesters were injured in the clash and a case was registered against 50 protesters.
Madan Thakur, co-convenor of the committee, said, “The Waqf Board should be abolished. The cases registered against the protesters should be withdrawn. The unauthorized mosque should be demolished and identification and verification of outsiders should be made mandatory.” A large number of people gathered in Hamirpur for protest on Saturday and had saffron banners and flags in their hands. Leaders of the Hindu rights organization demanded that the resolution to verify the documents of migrants in Himachal Pradesh be passed in the Gram Sabha meetings to be held across the state on October 2. A large number of policemen were deployed to maintain law and order in Shimla. Shops of members of the Muslim community remained closed.
