IPL 2025: Five players can be retained, teams also have the option of one right to match

Mumbai . For IPL 2025, all teams may have the option to retain five players. Apart from this, teams will also have the option of a Right to Match card during the auction. Details of the other retention rules will be finalized and made public ahead of the mega auction for the next IPL season, ESPNcricinfo has learned.

However, it has not been confirmed yet how many Indian players or foreign players will be retained. Overall, till now there is no information available regarding the changes in the retention rules as to what will be the number of Indian players, foreign players and uncapped players among the total players to be retained. Apart from this, information about how many slabs there will be for the retention of players is also not available. However, each team will have a purse of around Rs 115 to 120 crore.

The muchawaited announcement on the new retention rules of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is expected to be made soon as the Governing Council is scheduled to meet on Saturday. The announcement may take 24 hours but the possibility of a formal decision in the next few hours cannot be ruled out.

Cricbuzz can confirm that the IPL Governing Council meeting has been scheduled for Saturday (September 28). If sources are to be believed, it will take place at 6:30 pm at the new NCA Center in Bengaluru.

The decision to convene the IPL GC on Saturday was taken at the last moment as notices for the meeting were sent to the members only on Friday evening. An announcement can always be expected after the meeting. However, there is a feeling that the retention decision, a policy decision and that too an important one, may be placed before the important general meeting to be held in Bengaluru on Sunday, before it is made public.

Apart from deciding the number of retentions, the GC is also expected to decide on the date and venue of the megaauction. As of now, it is being said that it will take place in late November and may take place in some Gulf city. It is believed that Saudi Arabia is also keen to host the auction and if the GC gives approval, it could also be held in Riyadh.
