Art the Clown has entered the ranks of slasher film icons after his brutal and bloody crime spree in the Terrifier franchise.
That puts him alongside the same type of killers that director Damien Leone idolized from the tender age of three. “There wasn't a lightbulb moment where he just came at me full on, as is,” Leone reflects on Art's inspiration in the new issue of SFX magazine, which features Terrifier 3 on the cover and will reach newsstands on October 2. “It was a little more gradual, but it was actually a steady diet of horror movies since I was three. Literally, my mom named me The True Story. I knew from a very young age, like two, that I was named the name of this horror movie, they named me the Antichrist.
“I watched horror movies with my mother; she was very liberal in that sense, she let me watch quite intense movies,” he continues. “I really fell in love with slashers, bogeymen. I became very familiar and obsessed with that particular genre, where those were my heroes.
“So consuming my entire life almost without realizing it, I spit out Art the Clown, as if I had to give something back. It's essentially a love letter to all those characters.”
