New York: The death toll from Hurricane Helen in America has reached at least 44. According to reports, the states of Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia have been badly affected by this storm and these deaths have also occurred in these states. Hurricane 'Helen' caused massive devastation in Florida and the entire south-eastern US on Friday. When the storm hit the Big Bend rural area of Florida late on Thursday night, its maximum speed was 225 kilometers per hour. Due to the storm, there was power failure in many states of America, affecting about 40 lakh people.
Twin children and their mother were among those killed.
Those killed in the storm included 3 firefighters, a woman and her 1-month-old twins, as well as an 89-year-old woman whose home was hit by a falling tree. Electricity supply to 40 lakh households in the country came to a standstill
Warnings were also issued for strong winds and flash flooding due to Helen. Even before the storm made landfall, strong winds had disrupted power supply to about 4 million homes and business establishments in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The governors of Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Carolinas and Virginia had declared emergencies in their respective states. Category 4 Hurricane Helen knocked out power to some hospitals in southern Georgia, and Governor Brian Kemp said officials had to use chainsaws to clear debris and open roads.
