IIT Bombay gets Rs 700 crore fund for research and development

New Delhi. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has secured a record Rs 700 crore as annual grant for research and development in 202324.

This is the highest amount received in the last three years. The institute had received Rs 576 crore in 202223 and Rs 502 crore in 202122. The R&D fund is a combination of funds received from government and nongovernment agencies. Funds received from private agencies account for 35 per cent of the grant amount, while the rest is given by government agencies.

“IIT Bombay has made concerted efforts to align its R&D with the national goal of achieving technological selfreliance. The institute has established several large multidisciplinary research centres to address complex problems in a holistic manner, involving researchers from various academic units,” the institute said in a statement.

It said students and faculty members conduct research projects in all areas of science, engineering, design, management and humanities.

“New R&D projects are initiated every year across all areas of science, engineering, management, design and social sciences, including both shortterm consultancy and longterm sponsored research. The duration of the projects typically ranges from 25 years,” the institute said.

IIT Bombay will use this grant to launch projects like Maharashtra Drone Mission by the Department of Technical Education. To promote indigenous technology development and establish Maharashtra as a world leader in drone technology, the department funded a project with an outlay of Rs 151.8 crore.
