Anura Kumara Dissanayake wins Sri Lanka's presidential election, PM Modi congratulates him – Top News Bulletin


Colombo: Marxist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake has won the Sri Lankan presidential election. 56-year-old Dissanayake will now become the new President of Sri Lanka. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Anura Kumara Dissanayake for his victory in the Sri Lankan presidential election and said that he looks forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the multifaceted cooperation between India and Sri Lanka.

Let us tell you that Marxist leader Dissanayake has been declared the winner of the presidential election by the Election Commission of Sri Lanka. Dissanayake, the leader of the National People's Power (NPP), a broad front of the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Party, defeated his nearest rival Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB). Modi said on 'X', “Congratulations to Anura Kumara Dissanayake for winning the presidential election of Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka has a special place in India's Neighborhood First policy and Vision Sagar.” The Prime Minister said, “I look forward to working closely with you to further strengthen our multifaceted cooperation for the benefit of our people and the entire region.

Who is Dissanayake?

He is a leftist leader. Disanayake was born in Thambuthegama, Sri Lanka. His mother was a housewife and father a laborer. But Disanayake got education till university in difficult circumstances. During his school days, he joined the Marxist Janata Vimukthi Peramuna Party (JVP). In 2004, he became a cabinet minister for the first time in the government of then Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumar Tunga. But after 1 year, he resigned in protest against an agreement between the government and LTTE. After becoming the leader of JVP in 2014, he contested the presidential election for the first time in 2019. But then he got only 3 percent votes. This time in 2024, he reached the chair of the President by getting more than 53 percent votes.
