Poor batting in the first innings was the reason for the defeat: Shanto

Chennai. After evaluating Bangladesh's defeat in the Chennai Test against India step by step, captain Nazmul Hasan Shanto said that his team would have been in a better position if they had not lost five wickets at a score of 40 on the second day. Bangladesh was all out for 234 runs in the second innings while in the first innings the entire team was able to add only 149 runs to the scoreboard.

Shanto said after the match, “We did not bat well in the first innings. That was the most important phase of the match. If there was a good partnership in the top order, we would have been in a better position. The top order will always face the challenge of doing better, especially in the first innings. It is important how we are facing this challenge. We are working in this regard but we are not getting the desired results.”

In the second innings, Bangladesh's opening pair did add 62 runs for the first wicket but then Bangladesh was facing a huge target of 515 runs.

Shanto said, “It is good to spend time on the wicket but today it was not enough. However, it will definitely help us in the second Test. These runs were very important for the opening pair and we expect a better performance from them in the next Test match.”

Shanto scored a halfcentury after 11 Test innings and in this innings he hit eight fours and three sixes. This innings will give a lot of confidence to him and Bangladesh, although he himself feels that he could have done better.

“This is how I bat in such situations. My plan was clear. I think everyone has a different strategy. I think India will come up with a different strategy in the next match.”

According to Shanto, the conditions on the fourth day morning were not conducive for batting. Bangladesh started the day with a score of 158 for four and Shanto was also facing difficulty in playing Mohammad Siraj in the beginning.

“The morning session was tough, the way Siraj and other bowlers were bowling. Shakib also batted well. We tried to contribute to the team. We tried to bat for as long as possible. The morning session was positive for us but after that we did not bat well.”

Rohit Sharma brought Ravichandran Ashwin to the attack to break the partnership of Shakib Al Hasan and Shanto and Ashwin did not disappoint his captain. After this, the remaining wickets fell within 40 runs. Shanto's innings and the brief counterattack of the opening pair are positive aspects for Bangladesh before the next Test, but if most of the batsmen fail in Kanpur too, then difficult situations may arise for Bangladesh there too.
