From 'Papa Modi Ji ne war rozvaa di' to global peacemaker: How Modi is balancing Russia and Ukraine

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's diplomatic prowess has established him as a key player on the global stage during the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Modi's recent visit to Ukraine, the first by any Indian Prime Minister in three decades, not only reignited discussions in India but also demonstrated how Modi is succeeding in maintaining a balance between conflicting global powers. This balancing effort, along with India's historic ties with both Russia and Ukraine, has raised hopes of PM Modi emerging as a potential peacemaker in these challenging times. Whether it is the G20 summit hosted by India or his consecutive visits to Russia and Ukraine in a span of six weeks, PM Modi has made the right moves.
Diplomatic Strategy:
IndiaRussia relations date back to the Cold War era, when the Soviet Union was India's strong ally. The IndoSoviet Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation signed in 1971 is a testimony to these deep ties. Russia has been India's major defence partner over the years, supplying military equipment and technology to India. Ukraine, on the other hand, after gaining independence from the Soviet Union, became an important partner for India in sectors such as defence, education and agriculture. Balancing these relations has been a challenging task during the RussiaUkraine conflict. While Western countries, led by the US, have been pushing for a tough stand against Russia, India has maintained a neutral stance and advocated dialogue and peace. The Modi government has continued dialogue with both Russia and Ukraine, and has refused to isolate Russia despite Western pressure. An example of this can be seen in India's purchase of crude oil from Russia despite Western sanctions.
PM Modi appeals for peace:
Modi's visit to Ukraine was symbolic, indicating India's commitment to peace and its willingness to engage with all parties. The welcome Modi received in both Russia and Ukraine shows that India can act as a bridge between East and West. Discussion has also started on social media about Modi's Ukraine visit. The phrase 'Papa Modi ji ne war rukwa di', which came up as a taunt during the Lok Sabha elections, has now emerged in a different tone. Modi supporters are praising his diplomatic efforts on social media. At the same time, critics question whether this visit will actually have any impact on the ground level.
Narendra Modi as a peacemaker:
Modi's efforts to engage with both Russia and Ukraine and emphasize on dialogue and peace can give India an opportunity to emerge as a potential mediator in this conflict. India's historical nonalignment policy and current neutral stance give it the credibility needed for mediation. Modi's personal relationship with the leaders of Russia and Ukraine can also further strengthen India's role. Opposition's silence after Modi's visit: Interestingly, the opposition, including the Congress, is largely silent after Modi's visit. Despite the echo of taunts like 'Papa ne war rokwaa di', the opposition has not made any strong statement on this issue. This makes it clear that PM Modi's diplomatic efforts are succeeding in bringing India to a leading role in global peace efforts.
