Seoul: British tennis star Emma Raducanu was forced to retire from the Korea Open quarterfinals against top seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia due to a persistent leg injury.
The 21yearold, who showed signs of discomfort in her previous match against Yu Yuan, struggled from the start against the world number 13.
Raducanu needed a medical timeout after the fifth game of the first set, but despite her attempts to continue playing she eventually decided to retire after losing the opening set 61. The injury proved to be too difficult to recover from, cutting her campaign in Seoul short.
In her last match, Raducanu won in straight sets over China's Yu Yuan. The British player, ranked 70th in the world, won six games in a row to take the first set and then grab the second. She eventually converted her seventh match point to win 64, 63 and advance to the quarterfinals in Seoul.
Kasatkina, who reached the semifinals, will face compatriot Diana Schnyder or Marta Kostyuk of Ukraine on Saturday after rain interrupted play on Friday.
For Raducanu, it is another setback in her quest to regain top form after a series of injuries and inconsistent performances since her historic US Open win in 2021.
