After a brilliant performance, Bumrah revealed how he got batsmen out on the Chennai pitch

New Delhi. Jasprit Bumrah, who took four wickets against Bangladesh at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, revealed that he made changes in his bowling because his usual deliveries were not working on the second day. Bumrah explained how he took the wicket of Mushfiqur Rahim when the pitch was not offering much help.

“The ball was a bit old, there wasn't much movement, but there was some bounce from the pitch. I thought if I bowled a little further, there wouldn't be much swing. So I thought how to make it difficult for the batsmen to score runs. That's what I focused on and luckily I got the outside edge,” Bumrah told JioCinema after the day's play.

Bumrah said that he had to change his bowling due to the circumstances. He said, “I did not have many options because when I was trying to bowl long balls, the ball was not doing anything special and there was no reverse swing either. So I had to try something new because when the pitch does not help, as a bowler you have to experiment. There was no grip on the pitch, so I tried some methods used in domestic cricket. Today they worked and this experience was beneficial for me.”

He also talked about the use of bouncers in the match and said, “I usually don't bowl so many bouncers in Test cricket. The weather was also very difficult and I am just making a comeback to Test cricket, so I had to make some changes. The ball had become wet due to sweat, and the seam had also become wet. In such a situation, different methods had to be tried to take wickets and stop runs.”

After this, Bumrah told what discussion he had with captain Rohit Sharma regarding bowling strategy.

He said, “Rohit understands the bowlers very well. The weather was tough, and all the players are returning after some time. We were also playing a Test match after a long time, so everyone had to get into rhythm. The talk was about short spells so that they could be effective. We have fast bowlers who want to bowl fast and spinners who can make an impact. When the ball is new, the seam is hard, and there is some movement, we had to take advantage of it.”

Bumrah said that we changed the angle according to the conditions and I came round the wicket. There was some help from the new ball and we focused on that.

At stumps on day two, India were 813 and had a lead of 308 runs. Shubman Gill (33*) and Rishabh Pant (12*) will resume their innings on day three. Earlier, Ashwin's Test century (113), Ravindra Jadeja's 86 and Yashasvi Jaiswal's 56 helped India post 376 on day one at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
