MercedesBenz Korea chief to meet victims of 100 cars destroyed by EV fire

SEOUL: MercedesBenz Korea CEO and President Mathias Vatel will meet with citizens of South Korea's Incheon district after a fire involving a MercedesBenz electric vehicle destroyed more than 100 parked vehicles at an apartment complex, sources said on Wednesday.

Sources said Vatel plans to meet residents of apartments in Cheongna, Incheon, to discuss taking steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Yonhap news agency reported that a MercedesBenz parked in the parking lot of an apartment complex in Cheongna, Incheon, suddenly caught fire on August 1. The fire engulfed more than 100 vehicles parked in the parking lot.

Sources said that the notice of Wattal's arrival was given online to the people of the apartment complex. This is the first time after the fire incident that Wattal will appear in front of the public.

Vatel was on a trip to Germany when the incident occurred and returned to South Korea only on Monday. Last Friday, senior company officials met with citizens, offering aid worth 4.5 billion won (US$3.3 million).

Due to the fire in the vehicle, essential services like electricity and water were disrupted and thousands of people living there had to move to another place.

In a message to South Korea's Yonhap, Vatel said the company was in discussions with all relevant parties regarding the accident.
