Bumrah hits a four, Bangladesh all out for 149, India takes a lead of 308 runs

Chennai. Due to a strong performance by the bowlers led by Jaspreet Bumrah (4 wickets for 50 runs), India bowled out Bangladesh for 149 runs in the first innings after tea on the second day of the first test on Friday. India got a huge lead of 227 runs in the first innings but decided to play in the second innings without enforcing followon and till stumps on the second day, India has scored 81 runs after losing three wickets. India now has a total lead of 308 runs.

In India’s second innings, captain Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 5 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal for 10 and Virat Kohli for 17 runs. At stumps, Shubman Gill was at the crease with 33 runs and Rishabh Pant with 12 runs. India had got a big lead of 227 runs in the first innings, which has now increased its total lead to 308 runs.

Earlier, in Bangladesh’s first innings, apart from Bumrah’s four wickets, Mohammad Siraj, Akash Deep and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each. Bumrah became the sixth Indian fast bowler to take 400 international wickets during this period. For Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan scored 32, Mehdi Hasan Miraz scored an unbeaten 27, Liton Kumar Das scored 22 and captain Nazmul Hussain Shanto scored 20 runs.

India put Bangladesh on the backfoot by taking three wickets in the first session. Bangladesh lost five more batsmen in the second session.

After lunch, Siraj kept the ball on the line and it took the outside edge of Nazmul Hossain Shanto’s bat and went straight to third slip. In the next over, Bumrah moved the ball late and it took a good edge of Mushfiqur Rahim’s bat and went to second slip. Despite the consistent line and length of the bowlers, Liton Das and Shakib Al Hasan tried to hold on to the situation.

The duo smashed lovely drives off Bumrah, Siraj and Akash Deep before Shakib hit more boundaries off loose deliveries from Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.

The 51run stand for the sixth wicket ended when Das tried to sweep a delivery from Jadeja outside offstump but the ball went to substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel at deep backward square leg. Das made 22.

In Jadeja’s next over, Shakib tried to reversesweep, but the ball hit his shoe and Rishabh Pant stepped forward and took an easy catch. Hasan Mahmud and Mehdi Hasan Miraz hit three fours. Bumrah had Hasan Mahmud caught at second slip at tea time.

India took two more wickets after tea and wrapped up the visitors’ innings at 149 runs. Bumrah bowled Taskin Ahmed and Siraj bowled Nahid Rana. Taskin and Nahid Rana both scored 11 runs each.

In the morning session, the Indian team was able to add 37 runs to its yesterday’s score. Taskin Ahmed gave the first three blows to India while Hasan Mahmud took the last wicket in the form of Jaspreet Bumrah and got the Indian innings all out. Mahmud bowed down as soon as he opened his hands. He has also become the first bowler from Bangladesh to take a fivewicket haul in India. Yesterday, Mahmud also took the first four wickets of India. Mahmud got five wickets for 83 runs and Taskin Ahmed got three wickets for 55 runs.

India’s experienced offspin allrounder Ravichandran Ashwin topscored in the Indian innings.

Bangladesh began the second day with a second new ball with Ashwin resuming at 102 not out to take India to 3396.

Taskin Ahmed dismissed Ravindra Jadeja in just his second over of the day, breaking the 199run partnership by edging the ball off the edge of his bat to the keeper. The lefthanded batsman missed out on a hundred by 14 runs.

Akash Deep (17) hit four boundaries before he was caught at midoff by Taskin. Taskin picked up his third wicket of the day when Ashwin mistimed his drive and was caught at midoff to depart for 113 off 133 balls. He received a standing ovation from the Chepauk crowd.

Mahmud ended India’s first innings by having Jasprit Bumrah caught at third slip in less than an hour on Day 2. The pacer also became the first Bangladesh bowler to take five wickets in Tests in India.
